 TOPIC:                       CONTENT – LITERATURE APPRECIATION

DUE DATE:               FRIDAY APRIL 13, 2007

 TASK

It is possible to disapprove of a character’s actions while sympathising with his/her situation. Discuss how this is achieved in Euripides’ controversial Greek tragedy, Medea.

NOTE:

In constructing your response, a definition of the notions of sympathy and disapproval should be included. Sympathy denotes a feeling, while disapproval suggests a moral judgement. You might disapprove of Medea’s wild, irrational, murderous behaviour but sympathise with her predicament as a betrayed women. As with the Chorus in the play, you might feel sympathy for the way she is exiled and trapped.
